While the numbers of monkeypox infections have been growing steadily, their doubling time has extended a bit too. It doubles every 12 days or so now. When it first appeared in was doubling every 3 or 4 days but quarantine, isolation, knowledge about spread and symptoms, and use of some drugs has slowed it down. We are still on target to have around 100 million cases by Christmas, and likely to become our next pandemic.
Currently ether are 15,165 confirmed cases of monkeypox. It has been confirmed in 64 countries, suspected in another 10. The graph below shows which countries have the most cases.
Up until recently there were no deaths from monkeypox, but there are now 5 deaths. I read after posting all of this that the WHO has announced the 5 deaths are in Africa, none in rich countries. I do not know if it is this NEW strain of one of the old strains now, or it juts happened or is for the year. what a useless piece of bs journalism. Seriously. I thought 70 have died in the Congo region from the other clade.
There are 2 clades of monkeypox. The one circulating around the world now is primarily linked to the Nigerian form which has a CFR of 1% (3 % in children). The other clade is in the Congo and has a CFR of 10% (30% in children).
We also have a new outbreak of Malburg in Ghana, and an Ebola-like nosebleed haemorrhage fever virus in Tanzania, as well as a peculiar Ebola outbreak in the UK earlier this year. Search my posts by clicking on my name.
Apparently the first reported death was in China. WHO (who) knows, indeed. I did not even know it was in china. Maybe it came from China.
But it is important to note that 13% are hospitalized, and many of them may need permanent specialist care, so even if CFR/death rate is low or even zero it can be just a devastating. Brain damage is always a possibility. Encephalitis has been seen with the Nigeria clade.
And how will monkeypox impact other diseases like AIDS or people with compromised immune systems.
If it continues to spread like it is, it will be a pandemic. No question of that. Westerns love spreading shit.
Could my pet get monkeypox?
Monkeypox is zoonotic, meaning it can spread between animals and people. However, CDC does not currently believe that monkeypox poses a high risk to pets. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
During the 2003 monkeypox outbreak in the United States, we did not see disease spread to domestic animals other than prairie dogs, and we do not have reason to believe that we will see that now. However, we still recommend that people with monkeypox avoid interacting with animals and find someone else to take care of their pets while they recover.
