A new variant of the novel coronavirus, BA.12, was found in Bihar’s Patna on Thursday. According to the state’s health department, the new variant of Omicron was found in the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS).
There is a new kid in town and we have not dealt with waves from BA.2.9, BA.2.2, BA.2.12, BA.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5. It is BA.12 and the word is it could be 10 times deadlier than the usual omicron in one article, while another says it is 10 times more infectious. I tend to believe the latter than the former as I doubt anyone has died to say it is 10 time more deadly.
I estimated the R naught value of the Delta variant to be 12.5 and Omicron to be at least 3 times more infectious than delta, bring it R0 value to over 30, so this variant could have an R0 value of over 200, making it the most infectious pathogen ever. Measles had an R0 value of 16-18.
This is a never-ending scenario of variants being bred by vaccine complacency and the large virus pool in world. Close to 100 million people in the world are actively infected at any one time. ‘Deltacron“, a dangerous recombinant variant from Delta and Omicron, is likely to be 10 times more deadly if it behaves like the Delta variant, Deltarcron is still ‘alive’ and many other recombinant variants are likely taking form right now as we speak with so many actively infected people. As one recovers another gets infected and inside this massive virus pool the virus is free to mutate around the vaccine induced immunity. Vaccines are already useless, they will be even more useless soon. Crossover of 2 variants is also possible in patients infected with 2 different variants at the same time.
This is why I always wanted Western Australia, Australia and the world to go for #zerocovid. It is the only solution to this rolling never-ending pandemic. We had opportunities to end the pandemic (at least 3) but we chose not to do anything., We juts had to #stoptravel for a few months. It was all very possible. The future looks so murky right now.
