Another Ebola-like virus has surfaced in the United Kingdom. God help us if this breaks out as it has a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 40%. It is the second haemorrhagic fever Ebola-Like virus to surface in the UK in the last month.

Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) has a high mortality rate and presents with similar symptoms at the start of infection, but unlike Ebola it does not spread easily from human to human. It is passed through tick bites.

On 1 March it was reported that 3 people in the UK tested positive to Lassa Fever, including an infant who died. The CFR of Lassa Fever is 1 to 3%. This virus is spread in the urine and saliva of wild rats.

Last year in August 2021 the first case of fatal Marburg virus disease was identified in Guinea, West Africa. Malbburg has a CFR of a staggering 90%.

Ebola-like viruses cause hemorrhagic fevers. These are marked by severe bleeding (hemorrhage), organ failure and, in many cases, death. These viruses are native to Africa, where sporadic outbreaks have occurred for decades. As noted above, Malburg recently flared up in Guinea in Africa.

The Malburg virus spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, surfaces and materials.

The origin of the Malburg virus are bats.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare and deadly disease in people and nonhuman primates. The viruses that cause EVD are located mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. People can get EVD through direct contact with an infected animal (bat or nonhuman primate) or a sick or dead person infected with Ebola virus.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Ebola vaccine, ERVEBO^®, for the prevention of EVD. ERVEBO vaccine has been found to be safe and protective against only the Zaire ebolavirus species of ebolavirus.
